Hello AZDGC Members, Papago Disc Golf Course is now 18 holes of challenging desert golf!

By Mike “Pancho” Villa Papago Disc Golf Club

For those of you haven't heard, a clean up was organized for a section of Moeur (Papago) Park that in the past, had been used as an illegal dump. On 03/22/08, 30+ volunteers and 3 city employees managed to turn an environmental hazard into a useable park. Our original plan was to stage the project over two or three clean-ups but due to the hard work and great turn out of our volunteers, the majority of the trash was removed in one day. Broken glass, cans, constuction material and other debris dating back to the 1950s were hauled to a dumpster provided by the City of Tempe. Dead branches and more glass will continue to be picked up for some time, but I am happy to report that the City of Tempe was more than impressed with our progress! Pics from the clean up are here... Here is a letter from our contact at Tempe....

Mr. Villa: On behalf of the City of Tempe and our Parks Maintenance team we wanted to thank you for your team's time and effort at the Papago Disc Golf Course on Saturday, March 22nd, 2008. As a group you were able to remove two roll-off size piles of debris from the park, including glass, tree branches and other miscellaneous items. The area is not only more aesthetically pleasing but is also much safer for our users, as we work together to convert the dumping area into another 9 holes of disc golf. We really appreciate the support and know the Papago Park community will benefit immediately from the project. Please pass along our appreciation to your hardworking and dedicated team.
Thank you again.
Sincerely, Crag Hayton, North parks Supervisor, City of Tempe

I am proud to announce that after four years of work, there are now nine new holes at Papago DGC making it 18 holes of challenging desert golf! Tempe parks had some old chain assemblies and buckets leftover from the old Papago course (located at Curry and College and was pulled in 1996) and were able to fabricate some new center poles for them. That made three additional baskets to be added to the 18 already out there. So, that makes 11 baskets on the 1-9 side and 10 baskets on the 10-18 side. Holes 3 and 4 have retained there long and short baskets, and there is a practice basket near the ramada between 18's basket and 10's tee. The new nine area is the land North of Operations Drive and parallel to the original course. A 10-18 course map is available for download here... Course map holes 10-18

When you go, try to take advantage of the parking area right off of Mill Ave and Operations Drive. There is a nice ramada there with a new grill and three baskets to warm up on, and some course maps. Then, when you finish 1-9 and refill your water bottle, you can use steps from the parking lot that lead you right up to the tee pad for 10. The 18th hole finishes right back where you started. For now, we have only dirt tee pads but after the course gets a bit worn in and we are happy with the layout, pads will be installed. Tee signs for the entire 18 will be made in the coming weeks as we still need to create all of the artwork, calculate distances, and then Tempe will make them for us. The course plays a bit tight so please excercise good judgement before throwing as it is easy to stray into other fairways. Please try to stay off the SRP pipeline that runs the length of the North side. SRP is concerned about erosion and we would like to keep our neighbors happy. Operations Dr and beyond, Mill Ave sidewalk and beyond, Rolling Hills GC fence, and SRP fence east of hole 15, are all OB. There are several blue chalk arrows that should help guide you around the course but we plan to make lots of improvements soon so that even a newbie without a map can find his way around. Tuesday doubles is at 5:00pm for now and Saturday doubles is moving to 3:30pm, please spread the word.

I would like to extend my deepest thanks to the following groups and individuals for without whom, none of this would have been possible. The City of Tempe Parks and Rec Dept and especially Craig Hayton & Steve Ybarra, AZDGC, Papago Disc Golf Crew, 4hAndZ(Zach and Amy - I love you both!), Blackjax Sports, Discraft, Keith Murray, Paul Bussey, Eric and Tony Weber, Dave Manzo, Jim Rabb, John Winterkorn, John Often, Andy McNeal, Steve Malts, Doug Burman, Adam Luy, Dwight House, Russell Shelton, Papago Brewing (thanks for the ales Mel!), Scott Birlin, Gary Jenkins, Will and Rose, Lisa Reisch, Cat and Dawg, Mark Villa, Mike Gaffney, Tommy Turner, Snowflake Steve, Coy Matthews, Mike Culliton, Rex Rogers, Ashley Akins, Ernie "Don't take no for an answer!" The Flagstaff Disc Golf Club is gearing up for the 10th Annual Treebash Open.

by Chris 'Barley' Kirby, Flagstaff Disc Golf Club

I played the 1999 Teva Treebash Open shortly after I moved to AZ, and have watched the event grow every year. Due to the success of the Treebash and the Worlds from the last few years, the PDGA has allowed us to up the sanctioning level to a supertour (A-tier).

The event is scheduled for May 31st-June 1st. We plan to use McPherson and Thorpe Park on Saturday, and finish up at Snowbowl on Sunday. The weather should be great this time of year, and we may even see some snow on the peaks.

Check out the results from last year. We hope to meet or exceed them in 2008:

The event value is the combined value of players' packages, cash and/or merchandise payout, trophies and other prizes:

2007 Professional Event Value: $6,565 = 367% above entry fees
2007 Amateur Event Value: $9,295 = 441% above entry fees

• There were 35 total sponsors in 2007, donating nearly $7000 in cash and merchandise

Here are some quotes taken from email comments on the tournament:

"You guys in the flagstaff area are truly blessed to have so much wonderful disc golf in your back yards! Each of the three courses was fun in a unique way and the event was well run and very organized."

"I was so impressed this weekend. The community, the courses, even the town is attractive. We may move there some day- probably in a couple years...anyways, I just wanted to say "thanks" in behalf of the Tucson crew."

"Great job! I had a great time and discovered just how out of shape I really am at the same time. I took a look at the shoes I won also, man are they nice! I dropped the order form in the mail this morning, can't wait to get them. I didn't realize how much fun golfing in Flagstaff was. I'm definitely going to try to make the rest of the tournaments up there this year - hopefully next year as well."

"AWESOME JOB!! Very organized and well run tourney. I am still daydreaming of discs flying off the mountain. Heap Big Thanx to the FDGC for putting on a great show!! Can't wait for next years!"
